Brand name: Yasmin
Generic name: Crisanta, Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol
Used for: Birth Control
Availability: Brand Yasmin 21 day and 28 day; generic Yasmin 21 day tablets
How Yasmin Works
Used as a popular method of birth control, Yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) prevents the release of an egg from the ovary but also affects the cervix and uterus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to attach to a uterus. Yasmin is also used to treat moderate acne in women who are at least 14 years old and have started to have menstrual periods, and who wish to use birth control pills to prevent pregnancy.
Generic Yasmin vs Brand Yasmin
Brand and generic Yasmin are chemically and therapeutically the same but they are manufactured by different manufacturers. We currently have the brand from Canada and Turkey and the generic from India.
Yasmin Possible side effects
Use Yasmin exactly as prescribed to you by your doctor. If you exhibit any signs of an allergic reaction (hives, labored breathing, swollen face/lips/tongue/throat), seek immediate emergency medical attention. If you experience any of the following side effects, immediately stop using Yasmin and contact your doctor:
• Breast lump
• Change in pattern/severity of migraine headaches
• Confused state of mind
• Dark urine/clay colored stools
• Depression, general ill feeling
• Increased perspiration, jaundice
• Loss of appetite, nausea
• Pain spreading throughout arms/shoulders
• Problems with vision/speech/balance
• Respiratory problems (coughing, wheezing, rapid breathing, etc.)
• Sudden onset of numbness of weakness
• Swelling, pain, warmth or redness in legs, swollen extremities (hands, ankles, feet)
Some less serious side effects that may not require medical attention (but that should still be monitored) include: changes in menstrual cycle, changes in weight or attitude, darkening of skin, decreased sex drive, freckles, nausea, nipple discharge, increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair, problems with contact lenses, tenderness of breasts, vaginal itching/discharge. It is important to note that the preceding lists account for some of the most commonly experienced side effects of Yasmin but do not necessarily represent an exhaustive list. If you are ever concerned that any medication may be having an adverse effect on you, contact a medical professional immediately.
Yasmin Guidelines
Talk to your doctor prior to taking Yasmin to determine if it is an appropriate contraceptive method for you. It is not to be taken if you are currently pregnant, or have very recently given birth. Tell your doctor about any pre-existing conditions you might have, but particularly: blood clotting, cancer, circulation problems, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, strokes, and unusual vaginal bleeding. While Yasmin has proven to be an extremely affective form of contraception, it is not infallible. You may wish to augment your birth control plan with condoms or spermicide, especially when you first begin using the drug. Talk with your doctor to establish what will be appropriate for you. If you miss taking a pill, your risk of becoming pregnant does increase. In this case, follow carefully the “missed dose” instructions, or talk to your doctor beforehand for further clarification. Make sure to tell your doctor about all other medications you are currently taking. Some drugs will lower the effectiveness of Yasmin including, but not limited to: antibiotics, narbiturate sedatives, hepatitis C medications, hiv/aids medications, and seizure medications.
