How Sucroferric Oxyhydroxide Works
Sucroferric Oxyhydroxide is the active ingredient in Velphoro; it is a drug that is used to control high phosphorus levels in adult patients who have end stage kidney disease and are on dialysis. Dialysis removes some phosphate from your blood, but it is difficult to remove enough to keep your phosphate levels balanced. Decreasing blood phosphate levels can help keep your bones strong, prevent unsafe buildup of minerals in your body, and may decrease the risk of heart disease and strokes that can result from high phosphate levels. Velphoro helps prevent as much phosphorus from being absorbed into your blood from the foods you eat. Velphoro is a chewable tablet. Do not swallow it without chewing the tablet first. You can crush the tablet to make it easier for you to chew. Always take Velphoro with a meal.
