How Ibandronate Works
Boniva, generic drug name ibandronate, is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in women past menopause. Boniva can also be used in men to treat osteoporosis. Boniva is a bisphosphonate which works by slowing down the rate of bone loss and allowing new bone can be formed. Bone resorption releases excessive amounts of calcium into the blood. Boniva may help lower the chances of breaking bones (fractures).
