How Risedronate Works
Risedronate is a medication that belongs to the family of medicines known as Bisphosphonates. Actonel and its generic counter- part are used to treat and prevent osteoporosis. It is used by women who are post-menopausal, and also by men to improve bone mineral density. Actonel is also used to treat a condition called Paget's disease. Risedronate works by increasing the thickness of bone by slowing down the cells that usually break down the bone. This allows the cells that build bone to work more efficiently. Risedronate makes the bones stronger which in turn reduces the amount of osteoporosis-related fractures. Actonel and the generic are a prescription medication, and are usually taken once a week or once a month depending on the dose.

When comparing brand Actonel to generic Risedronate the only significant difference is the manufacturer producing the medication; the brand will be manufactured by Aventis for the 35mg, and Proctor & Gamble for the 150 mg.
